- Start with a full tank of gas.
- Refuel at each fuel stop. Everyone should refuel at every
opportunity. If the tour leader refuels, you should also.
- Refuel each evening. This will give you a head start the next morning.
- Follow the tour leader's directions.
- Always keep the tour leader informed of your driving plans
(road stops, detours, etc.). If you are going to deviate from
the leader's directions, inform the leader and the people in your group.
- If you don't understand the directions, ask your leader to
explain them before you start the tour.
- Keep your tour groups together.
- If there are a large number of cars, divide them into several
small groups. Each group should have a leader who will keep track of the
members.
- Keep track of the car behind you.
- When the tour group makes a turn, make sure the car behind you
turned.
- Use CB radios to communicate between drivers and groups. If you don't have a CB, get in the ‘rocking chair’ and let others
in the group know.
- Always drive safely.
- Do not follow too close. The distance between cars should be maintained so an 18-wheeler can pass
and merge.
- A good guide for distances is 6 seconds between cars. When the person in front of
you passes a highway sign, count slowly to six. If you don't get to 6
before you pass the sign, leave a little more space.
- Always stop safely.
- Do not stop on the road or highway. If you must pull over, get
as far off the road as possible.
- Avoid stopping on a curve or hill, if possible.
- If you don't need help, motion the other cars in your group to
proceed without you.
- If one group stops, other groups should go on unless they are
requested to stop.
- If a car stops, others in that group should proceed at a
reduced speed until they find a good place to pull over and
wait.
